Caelan Doris Makes Irish Team While McCarthy Left Out

Ireland rugby squad announcement update

Returning manager Andy Farrell has selected captain Doris in his Irish squad for the autumn Tests, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

Doris, who has not played since having shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to Leinster training, with doubts lingering whether he will be fit to face New Zealand in Chicago on November 1.

Second row McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions match against Australia in the summer.

Ulster player Izuchukwu and Munster winger Calvin Nash are also absent due to injury, while full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation after the summer tour.

Leinster prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-player squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped provincial duo Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Bolton will travel to Chicago as "reserves".

After playing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, Ireland host the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions South Africa in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said Farrell, back to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a mostly familiar-looking squad, Leinster's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again compete for the first-choice number 10 position. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming URC match at Croke Park.

Frawley is the additional number 10 selected as the coach deciding not to calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test wins over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a recall for the western province's Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced cohort of centre options. Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.

McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has started a couple of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship matches so far and played in Ireland A's loss by England in Bristol earlier this year.

McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a cap.

Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, and experienced Ulster lock Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who started all three Lions Tests over the summer, is set to cover for the captain if the skipper fails to recover full fitness soon enough to play the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will meet in Dublin on Monday before traveling to Chicago on Tuesday.
